The Lost of a Loved one / Embrace of the Serpent

2022

Developed during the pandemic, these images explore the convergence of the real and digital worlds at a time when human connections were confined to online interactions.

Drawing from my personal photo archive, I rediscovered images that evoked memories of a time when I could freely immerse myself in nature. In contrast, I found myself confined to the urban sprawl of downtown São Paulo, the most populous city in Latin America. This stark juxtaposition between nature and urban isolation is palpable in both works.

By incorporating personal photographs into my 3D sculptural creations, I aimed to fuse tangible reality with digital expression. This synthesis serves as a coping mechanism for the profound loss felt during the pandemic—a loss that was intensified by a far-right presidency which, through its handling of Covid-19, left Brazil with one of the highest death tolls globally.

Ultimately, these works capture the anxiety of confronting nature and the digital facade we often hide behind. They serve as a poignant reminder that, despite our differences and the chaotic forces that shape our reality, we remain intrinsically connected to both the natural world and each other.
